School trustees make a difference
OUR OPINION
WANTED: Independent-minded individuals who have the good of their
community at heart. Abilities to understand complex issues and retain
objectivity are required. Must have time to spare, patience and an
understanding family. A good sense of humor wouldn't hurt, either.
The qualifications for the job of school board member are many. But so are
the rewards for those who find satisfaction in making a difference in the
lives of others.
The November election ballot will include four seats on the South Bend
Community School Corp. Board of Trustees. At-large
trustee Jo Blacketor and District 3 trustee Richard Sheehan have
decided not to seek re-election. Trustee Dawn Jones will run again for her
District 4 seat. At-large Trustee William Hojnacki has not yet decided if he
will stand for re-election.
Filing for the four open seats began last Wednesday and will continue
through Aug. 20.
We hope that many people will think seriously about whether school board
is a responsibility they could undertake. We also hope that there will be
lively campaigns with plenty of competition and discussion of the issues that
face the South Bend schools. For those who possesses the qualifications of a
good trustee, it would be difficult to find a more meaningful and important
way to serve one's community -- and especially its children.
